Winter Reminders
Snow Removal
Residents are reminded that borough ordinance Chapter 21, Section 321, requires that you remove snow from sidewalks within several hours of the end of a storm. We understand that storms create a hardship for all and we ask that property owners do their best to clear a path so that pedestrians and school children are safe. Trash Collection
Residents should be aware that severe weather may cause the hauler to adjust schedules or temporarily suspend operations. Go to the Trash and Recycling section under Information for Residents for hauler contact information to determine if weather is causing a problem with the collection schedule or to report missed pickups or complaints.
Recommendations on snow removal from our public safety officials and other online sources:
DO NOT throw snow on the streets as you clear your walkway and driveway. This is a safety issue and police will issue citations for those who do so.
We ask that you help your neighbors and that all residents check on seniors who may be stranded in their homes during severe weather
The Borough is not permitted to assist residents by clearing driveways, sidewalks, etc.
Take care to not overexert when shoveling snow. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids. Bend from the knees, not your back, to prevent back injury, and be sure not to overload your shovel. Try to push snow instead of lifting it.
Make sure that a snowblower is turned off before attempting to clear snow that may clog the chute or moving parts of the blower.
Heavy or packed snow on a natural gas meter could temporarily stop the flow of natural gas and create a hazard.
Plows may throw snow back into areas that have been previously shoveled as crews attempt to widen travel lanes during snow storms. Be prepared to shovel after the plow passes as waiting may allow the snow to turn to ice making it difficult to remove.
If you have room, remove snow from either side of your driveway entrance for a few feet as this may allow a snow plow to clear its load first rather than deposit a large amount of snow directly in front of your drive.

Safety Tips
In addition to the suggestions mentioned above:
Forest Hills is known for its friendly citizens and close neighborhoods but we cannot emphasize enough the need to check on neighbors and the elderly during an emergency.
If you are walking outside be aware of downed wires that may be buried in the snow; be aware of tree limbs above that may be overloaded by snow and in danger of breaking or falling. To avoid slipping, make yourself walk very slowly, and whenever possible step on snow, not shiny patches of ice.
Avoid walking in the street. If walking at night remember to wear light colored, reflective clothing so that you are visible.
Drivers: be aware of children playing in the snow or sledding

Be careful using candles, fireplaces, portable heaters and similar devices. Do not leave them unattended and make sure that you have proper ventilation.

Allow for adjustments and closings if weather conditions change; call ahead if in doubt at 412-351-7330. Always dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.
